John Medlin (he/they) is an early career playwright and dramaturg from Shreveport, Louisiana. He’s loved writing for as long as he can remember. They realized they had something of a knack for it when they won a national competition for a book chapter they wrote in High School. From there, John pursued a career in writing. He received his Master's in playwrighting with distinction from the University of Glasgow in Scotland. Since then, he’s gone on to write two full-length plays, a multitude of 10-minute plays, and a few screenplays. He’s had both of his full-length plays workshopped, their latest (Ghost Light) receiving a staged reading in front of industry professionals in Scotland. His writing has won him a few awards including a semi-finalist and runner-up award from the Del Shores Foundation Writer Search and a Star Award for Playwrighting through his undergraduate program. He loves writing plays that celebrate the things that make us different. He often writes, and studies, horror, LGBTQIA+ theatre, comedy, and drama. When they’re not writing, John likes to spend time with his husband, Steven, and pet Boston Terrier, Karen. He is also an avid gamer, foodie, and reader.
My love for storytelling started at a young age. I would frequently be found with my nose in a book and my head in the clouds. I would craft elaborate stories with malevolent monsters and grand heroes. That passion hasn't diminished. Whether it is crafting a narrative or writing copy, I inject storytelling into everything I do.
My Master's research was on the history of horror and LGBTQIA+ theatre. I love crafting character-centric narratives that push the boundaries of their chosen medium. My writing has been praised for its expressive dialogue, high concepts, and tight pacing.
